Sebastian Schmidt & Victoria Becker: The Weight of a Prompt – KI, Wasser und verkörperte Verantwortung

Im Rahmen des europäischen Projekts Turning the Tide entwickelte das Künstler:innen-Duo Sebastian Schmidt und Victoria Becker im Wiener Local Urban Lab IV die Arbeit The Weight of a Prompt. Das Projekt knüpft an die Grundidee von Turning the Tide an: Kunst als Mittel zu nutzen, um Fragen von Klimakrise, Wasser, Stadt und gesellschaftlicher Verantwortung im lokalen Kontext sichtbar und verhandelbar zu machen. Die Wiener Bildungsakademie begleitet diesen Prozess als österreichische Partnerinstitution und verbindet dabei künstlerische Forschung mit politischer Bildung, öffentlichem Dialog und Beteiligung.

Sebastian Schmidt ist zeitgenössischer Tänzer, Choreograf und Tanzpädagoge. Seine Ausbildung führte ihn von der Palucca Hochschule für Tanz in Dresden an die MUK in Wien, wo er Zeitgenössische Tanzpädagogik studierte und seine choreografische Sprache weiterentwickelte. Auf der Projektwebsite von Turning the Tide wird besonders hervorgehoben, dass Improvisation für ihn ein zentrales Mittel künstlerischer Forschung ist. Im Zentrum von The Weight of a Prompt steht eine zunächst unsichtbare, aber hochaktuelle ökologische Frage: Wie viel Wasser verbraucht Künstliche Intelligenz? Was im Alltag oft als rein digitale Handlung erscheint – ein Prompt, eine Anfrage, eine Bild- oder Textgenerierung –, ist in Wirklichkeit an materielle Infrastrukturen gebunden: Rechenzentren, Kühlungssysteme, Energie- und Wasserverbrauch. Das Projekt machte genau diese verborgene physische Dimension digitaler Technologien zum Ausgangspunkt einer künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung. Damit berührt die Arbeit ein Themenfeld, das für Turning the Tide zentral ist: die Verbindung von Wasser, urbaner Zukunft, ökologischer Transformation und gesellschaftlichem Bewusstsein.

Entwickelt wurde die Arbeit in mehreren Workshops, in denen Sebastian Schmidt und Victoria Becker gemeinsam mit Teilnehmer:innen recherchierten, diskutierten und erprobten, wie sich ein abstraktes Thema wie der Ressourcenverbrauch von KI in eine körperlich erfahrbare Form übersetzen lässt. Die Workshops waren dabei nicht nur Vorbereitung, sondern ein wesentlicher Teil des künstlerischen Werks selbst. Sie öffneten einen Raum, in dem Wissen, Wahrnehmung und Bewegung ineinandergreifen konnten. Aus Gesprächen über Technologie, Infrastruktur und Umwelt entwickelte sich Schritt für Schritt eine gemeinsame performative Sprache, die den Zusammenhang zwischen digitaler Nutzung und realem Wasserverbrauch sichtbar machen sollte.

Gerade in dieser Arbeitsweise zeigt sich die Qualität des Projekts: The Weight of a Prompt blieb nicht bei einer bloßen Illustration eines Sachverhalts stehen. Vielmehr wurde das Thema verkörpert, durchgespielt, befragt und in eine Form gebracht, die Menschen nicht nur informiert, sondern emotional und sinnlich anspricht. Die Teilnehmenden wurden nicht als Publikum im Nachhinein gedacht, sondern als Mitdenkende und Mitwirkende innerhalb eines offenen künstlerischen Forschungsprozesses. So entstand eine Arbeit, die sowohl ästhetisch als auch bildungspolitisch wirksam ist.

Der künstlerische Prozess mündete in zwei unterschiedliche Formen der Präsentation. Einerseits entstand ein Video, das die Fragestellungen und Bewegungsansätze des Projekts in verdichteter Form aufnimmt. Andererseits wurde die Arbeit in einer öffentlichen Tanzperformance am Platz der Menschenrechte in Wien in den Stadtraum getragen. Diese Aufführung, begleitet von Live-Musik, verschob das Thema aus dem Workshop- und Probenraum direkt in den öffentlichen Raum und ermöglichte eine unmittelbare Begegnung mit Passant:innen. Die Wahl des Ortes war dabei nicht zufällig: Der Platz der Menschenrechte steht für Öffentlichkeit, Sichtbarkeit und gesellschaftliche Aushandlung – und genau darum geht es auch in diesem Projekt.

Dass Gemeinderätin Mag.a Nina Abrahamczik, Mitglied im Gemeinderatsausschuss für Umwelt, bei der Abschlusspräsentation anwesend war, unterstreicht zusätzlich die politische Relevanz der verhandelten Fragen. The Weight of a Prompt zeigt damit beispielhaft, dass ökologische Themen wie Wasserverbrauch, digitale Infrastruktur und Verantwortung nicht nur wissenschaftlich oder technisch diskutiert werden sollten, sondern ebenso in Kunst und Öffentlichkeit ihren Platz haben müssen. Die Arbeit macht sichtbar, dass der Umgang mit Technologie immer auch ein Umgang mit Ressourcen ist – und damit mit Fragen der Gerechtigkeit, Nachhaltigkeit und Zukunftsfähigkeit unserer Städte.

Im Kontext von Turning the Tide nimmt das Projekt von Sebastian Schmidt und Victoria Becker eine besondere Stellung ein. Es verbindet zeitgenössische Performance mit ökologischer Fragestellung, künstlerische Forschung mit Vermittlung und kollektive Prozesse mit öffentlicher Sichtbarkeit. Ergänzend zum künstlerischen Prozess entwickelten Sebastian Schmidt und Victoria Becker ihre Arbeit in mehreren Workshops, die unter anderem im Wiener Bildungszentrum stattfanden. Diese Formate dienten nicht nur der inhaltlichen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema, sondern waren ein zentraler Bestandteil der künstlerischen Entwicklung selbst. Gemeinsam mit Teilnehmer:innen wurden Fragen rund um Wasserverbrauch, digitale Technologien und ökologische Verantwortung diskutiert, erprobt und in Bewegung übersetzt. Die Workshops bildeten somit die Grundlage für die performative Arbeit und machten den kollaborativen Charakter des Projekts sichtbar.

Sebastian Schmidt & Victoria Becker: The Weight of a Prompt – AI, Water and Embodied Responsibility

Within the Vienna Local Urban Lab IV of the European project Turning the Tide, the artist duo Sebastian Schmidtand Victoria Becker developed the work The Weight of a Prompt. The project follows the broader aim of Turning the Tide: to use art as a way of making questions of climate crisis, water, urban life and collective responsibility visible and discussable in local contexts. In Vienna, this process is supported by the Vienna Education Academy, which connects artistic research with political education, public dialogue and participation.

Sebastian Schmidt is a contemporary dancer, choreographer and dance educator. His training began at the Palucca University of Dance in Dresden and continued at MUK in Vienna, where he deepened his work in contemporary dance pedagogy. On the Turning the Tide website, improvisation is described as a central tool in his artistic research. This openness to movement as a form of inquiry strongly shaped The Weight of a Prompt.

Victoria Becker also works as a contemporary dancer, choreographer and dance teacher. Her practice combines a strong classical foundation with experimentation, improvisation and collaboration. The project website presents her as an artist who allows movement to emerge through curiosity, structure and spontaneity. This approach was crucial for the development of the work: instead of beginning with a fixed statement, the project started from an open question that was explored collectively through movement, discussion and artistic research.

At the heart of The Weight of a Prompt lies a pressing and often invisible ecological question: How much water does artificial intelligence consume? What appears in everyday life as a purely digital action – a prompt, a request, an image or text generation – is in fact tied to material infrastructures: data centres, cooling systems, energy use and water consumption. The project takes this hidden physical dimension of digital technologies as the starting point for artistic exploration. In doing so, it touches on a field that is central to Turning the Tide: the relationship between water, urban futures, ecological transformation and public awareness.

The work was developed through a series of workshops in which Sebastian Schmidt and Victoria Becker researched, discussed and tested together with participants how an abstract topic such as the resource use of AI could be translated into an embodied artistic form. These workshops were not merely preparatory steps; they were a substantial part of the artwork itself. They created a space in which knowledge, perception and movement could interact. Through conversations about technology, infrastructure and environment, a shared performative language gradually emerged, making visible the link between digital use and real water consumption.

This way of working is central to the quality of the project. The Weight of a Prompt does not simply illustrate a fact. Instead, it embodies the issue, questions it, rehearses it and transforms it into a form that is not only informative but also affective and sensorial. Participants were not considered an audience after the fact, but co-thinkers and contributors within an open artistic research process. In this way, the project became effective both aesthetically and educationally.

The artistic process resulted in two distinct forms of presentation. On the one hand, a video work was created, condensing the questions and movement research that shaped the project. On the other hand, the work culminated in a public dance performance at Platz der Menschenrechte in Vienna. Accompanied by live music, this performance brought the topic out of the workshop and rehearsal context and directly into urban public space, where passers-by could encounter it immediately. The choice of location was significant: Platz der Menschenrechte is a place associated with visibility, public space and civic negotiation – all of which resonate strongly with the themes of the work.

The presence of city councillor Mag.a Nina Abrahamczik, a member of the municipal committee for environmental affairs, further underlined the political relevance of the project. The Weight of a Prompt demonstrates that questions such as water consumption, digital infrastructure and ecological responsibility should not remain confined to scientific or technical debate. They also belong in art and in public space. The project makes visible that every use of technology is also a use of resources – and therefore connected to questions of justice, sustainability and the future of our cities.

Within the broader framework of Turning the Tide, the work by Sebastian Schmidt and Victoria Becker occupies a distinctive place. It connects contemporary performance with ecological inquiry, artistic research with mediation, and collective processes with public visibility. It is a work about water, even though no river, lake or conventional natural setting stands at its centre. This is precisely its strength: it shows that water also plays a decisive role where we do not immediately see it – within the hidden infrastructures of our digital present. In doing so, The Weight of a Prompt expands our understanding of water as an ecological and political resource and translates that insight into a precise and contemporary artistic form.

As part of their artistic process, Sebastian Schmidt and Victoria Becker developed the work through several workshops, including sessions at the Wiener Bildungszentrum. These formats were not only spaces for discussion, but an essential part of the artistic development itself.
